Aminal Stickers

Tell us about your background and how you got started.

I loved to draw as a kid and I got into digital art because I really wanted to be a Pokemon artist but that idea quickly got shot down. I started to learn more about the ‘practical’ career path once I hit mid high school and ended up getting a Software Engineering degree in college. Fortunately for me, software can still have a huge design and creative aspect, so I was fine with the compromise.

Where were you born and where do you live now?

If you have ever seen the old movie Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventure, they were from a small city in California called San Dimas, that’s where I am from and if you haven’t seen that movie, let’s just say I’m located in Los Angeles County. Now, I am in the San Fransisco Bay Area trying to adult.

What inspired you to make this sticker pack?

Once Apple announced that they were going to have stickers for iMessage, a lot of people groaned at the gimmick, but I was cheering on the inside because I love stickers! But when the iMessage store actually got released, I found that all the stickers I liked costed money and I was a cheapo so i didn’t want to buy any of it. And none of the free stickers at release were quite what I wanted either, so I was definitely disappointed. At this point, I was bitter and I figured I’ll make an Apple account and make my own stickers that I knew I would like and so my friends can use them for free too! So in about 5 days, I learned how to make iMessage stickers, drew about 24 stickers, and submitted it to the App store. Since then, the app has changed quite a bit and a lot more stickers have been added.

What is your favorite stickers?

Of my own stickers, I love them all for different reasons ;). My favorite other sticker pack though… hard to say! Off the top of my head, I really like Fluffcorn, I find the art adorable, the ihascupquake stickers has some high quality sticker art (I don’t even know who these people are), As Per Usual looks amazing and has great humor, and Sticker Pals has some of the best animations on the iMessage store!

How do you currently promote your stickers?

A lot of it started by word of mouth. After that started to die down, I tried a few other methods but the most effective has been facebook ads. I ended up creating some pretty effective campaigns and just run them for like a dollar or two a day normally.

Do you have any advice for new artists?

Making stickers is a lot more fun/less stressful if you are doing it for fun (I know, sounds obvious). From what I can tell, it’s not too profitable right now, so don’t expect much from it. For me, just seeing people use my stickers is already super rewarding and I love getting reviews! If you can get that and a few extra dollars a day, then even better!

Do you have any upcoming plans for stickers?

I try to update or make new Aminal Stickers a few times every week! The sticker set has grown from 24 to over 140 in about 5 months. At this point, users don’t even need to update their app to get the new stickers, they will automatically get them the next time they open their app! I have a huge list of ideas and people are always suggesting more, so i don’t know if I’ll run out of ideas any time soon, but I’d love to be able to work on something else some time. Not too sure what these other stickers would be yet…

What do you want to say to your fans?

Thank you, thank you, thank you! Your reviews and positive feedback make me so happy! If there is anything you want to see, just let me know and I’ll see what i can do!
